EU Digital Services Act adopted
The European Parliament and Council adopted the Digital Services Act on July 5, 2022 — imposing transparency, illegal-content removal, and algorithmic accountability rules on online platforms and search engines.
What it was for
The DSA complements GDPRGeneral Data Protection Regulation — EU law governing how organizations collect and process personal data. and the DMA: very large online platforms must publish risk assessments, offer recommender-system choices, and share data with researchers. Trust-and-safety teams, content moderators, and ML engineers building feeds faced new documentation and audit requirements — a template other democracies studied for their own platform laws.
Why it's here
The DSA is Europe's comprehensive content-moderation and platform-transparency law.
Why it mattered
It mandated algorithm transparency and researcher data access for the largest platforms.
What it solved
EU lawmakers wanted enforceable rules for illegal content and opaque recommendation algorithms.
